GEPHARDT TALK DOES NOT MATCH ACTIONS
House Democrat leader blocks education, trade initiatives that benefit Latinos WASHINGTON - In his third
bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, House
Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO) today spoke before the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza in Miami. While Mr. Gephardt sought to promote himself among the Latino community, he neglected to mention his positions on some of the most important issues affecting Latinos throughout America today. Among the topics Mr. Gephardt avoided in his speech are: Ø His role in blocking floor passage of the FED UP bill last Tuesday. FED UP is a bipartisan bill that would allow Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) to apply for federal grants without waiting two years between applications. FED UP would also allow the U.S. Department of Education to provide scholarship aid to low-income and minority students to prepare for and attend law school. Ø His role in fighting the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Ø His role in co-sponsoring legislation (H.RES.152) to delay granting Mexican trucks authority to operate in the United States beyond the commercial zone . Ø His role as House Minority Leader in withholding support for Hispanic candidates who challenge Democratic incumbents. "Mr. Gephardt is all talk and no substance when it comes to Latino issues. His mind and heart are set on the White House and not in taking care of America's business. Certainly, when it comes to Hispanic issues, he has either stood on the wrong side of the fence or remained silent," said RNC Deputy Director of Communications Sharon Castillo. # # # PARA DIVULGACIÓN INMEDIATA 22 de julio de 2002 GEPHARDT DICE PERO NO HACE Líder demócrata bloquea iniciativas educativas y comerciales que beneficiarían a los latinos WASHINGTON - En su tercer intento por obtener la nominación demócrata a la presidencia, Richard Gephardt, líder de la minoría en la Cámara de Representantes, se dirigió el lunes a los asistentes a la convención anual del Concilio Nacional La Raza que se celebra en Miami. Al promover sus puntos de vista ante la comunidad hispana, Gephardt omitió mencionar su opinión sobre varios de los temas que más afectan a la comunidad latina. Entre los temas que Gephardt omitió están: Ø Su papel en bloquear la aprobación el martes pasado del proyecto de ley conocido como FED UP. Ese proyecto de ley bipartidista permitiría que las denominadas HSIs (Hispanic Serving Institutions) soliciten fondos federales sin tener que esperar los dos años requeridos entre solicitudes. FED UP permitiría además al Departmento de Educación proveer becas a estudiantes de minorías o de bajos recursos que se aprestan a entrar a escuelas de derecho. Ø Su oposición al Tratado de Libre Comercio de Norte América (NAFTA, por sus siglas en inglés). Ø Su co-patrocinio a la ley H.RES.152 que niega el derecho de los camiones de carga mexicanos de operar más allá de las denominadas zonas comerciales en Estados Unidos. Ø Su papel en negarle el apoyo a candidatos hispanos que se enfrenten, en contiendas electorales, a incumbentes demócratas. "Cuando de temas latinos se trata, el señor Gephardt habla mucho pero hace poco. Su mente y su corazón están centrados en la Casa Blanca y no en manejar los asuntos que atañen a los estadounidenses. Es claro que en lo referente a temas que afectan a los hispanos, Gephardt ha estado siempre en el bando contrario, o se ha mantenido silencioso," dijo Sharon Castillo, Subdirectora de Comunicaciones del Comité Nacional Republicano. # # # |
