PRESS RELEASE
Republican National Hispanic
Assembly For Hispanics, Tax Relief is about families. June 1, 2001 When Congressman Brian Baird holds a Latino listening session in Longview WA this Sunday, he should explain why he voted against a tax-relief bill that will clearly help Hispanic families. So says Washington Republican National Hispanic Assembly Chairman Dr. Pedro Celis. Last Saturday, Baird (D-3rd Congressional District) voted against President Bushs $1.35 trillion tax cut, which includes income tax reductions for all taxpayers, a phase-out of the marriage tax penalty, a doubling of the per-child tax credit from $500 to $1,000, incentives for parents to save for their childrens education through education IRAs, and elimination of the death tax. Im very interested to hear Congressman Bairds reason for voting no on a bill that will do so much to help Hispanic families and Hispanic business owners, said Celis. It seems like Mr. Baird does not realize the significant economic benefits of this bill to Hispanics in our state. Celis said the family-oriented aspects of the Bush tax-relief plan are especially important to Washington Hispanics given its demographics. Recent census figures indicate that in Washington state, 40 percent of Hispanics are under age 18, while only 25 percent of non-Hispanics are under 18. In the year 2000, 31 percent of Hispanic households had five or more persons; for non-Hispanic white households, that number was 12 percent. Hispanic families could hardly ask for a better tax-relief plan than President Bushs, said Celis. It is a family-friendly package that will put some of the surplus money back into our wallets. And it is a responsible plan because the Presidents budget also pays down the maximum amount of federal debt possible and protects Social Security and Medicare. Hispanic businessmen and women will also benefit from the Bush tax plan, said Celis, who noted that the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has endorsed it. The Presidents tax-relief plan will help Washingtons Hispanic business grow and foster economic development, said Celis. It will also create access to capital, which is critical for our small business owners. Congressman Baird campaigned as someone who would support tax relief, and now owes the Hispanic community an explanation for his no vote on a tax-relief bill that is clearly beneficial to our families.
