Washington State Chapter of the RNHA Established. March 29, 2001 This past Saturday a group of prominent Republicans from around the state gathered in downtown Seattle for the purpose of forming a Washington State chapter of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly (WRNHA). Prominent Mercer Island Citizen, Jesus Sanchez served as the Convention Chairman and Seattle attorney Steve Cuevas was the Convention Secretary. The state chapter was formed, its constitution adopted, and officers were elected. A number of resolutions were passed as well. Bellingham resident Marta Guevara, former candidate for the Washington State legislature and the WRNHA's newly elected National Committeewoman, told attendees that "“Un nuevo día” has dawned in Washington State Republican politics with the formation of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly of Washington State. The WRNHA will serve as a bridge between the Hispanic community of Washington and the Republican Party." Warden City Councilman, Roque Garza, a retired G3 Sergeant Major and the new Secretary for the RNHA Washington state chapter added that "Virtues and morality -- integrity, honesty, hard work, faith, hope, love, recognizing the sanctity of life, gratitude -- know no racial or ethnic boundaries, but are eternal truths we all should seek and share." The mission of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, and its new Washington State Chapter, is to build a membership organization to foster the principles of the Republican Party in the Hispanic community; to provide Hispanic Americans with a forum to play an influential role in local, state and national party activities; to increase the number of Hispanic Republican elected officials; and to create and maintain a network of Hispanic Republican leaders. The desire to establish the organization arouse from the many volunteers that worked in the "Hispanics for Bush" campaign in the last presidential election. Exit polls show that President Bush took about 38% of the Hispanic vote and garnered the largest number of Hispanic votes of any Republican Presidential candidate. He has previously been re-elected Governor of Texas with over 50% of the Hispanic vote. Since taking office, Mr. Bush has appointed more Hispanics to his administration than any other president. He established a new precedent by making his first foreign trip a visit to Mexico. During the campaign he framed education reform as a civil-rights issue and sprinkled Spanish into some of his speeches. His Mexican-American nephew, George P. Bush, campaigned for him in the state of Washington. Many Hispanics, even those that did not vote for him, are becoming more confident that the new president has their interests at heart. The founding of the new Washington State organization comes at a time when Hispanics are increasing their political clout: Hispanics form the largest minority in Washington State, at 7.6% of the total population, and Census figures released recently revealed that the state's Hispanic population grew by almost 106% in the last decade. Close to 28% of the increase in population in the state came from people of Hispanic origin, far exceeding the projections that the Census Bureau office had released a few years earlier. King County has the largest number of Hispanics -- 95 thousand -- in the state, followed closely by Yakima County at 80 thousand. Adams and Douglas counties have the largest percentage of Hispanics, both of them close to 47%. WRNHA's new state chairman, Dr. Pedro Celis, a Microsoft employee, noted, "Hispanics have become a very important cog in the wheel of American prosperity. But with the increase in numbers comes a corresponding increase in our responsibilities. Hispanics have some catching up to do in the business world, the political process and in the social arena. This organization is committed to making Hispanics an integral part of the fabric of the Republican Party and encouraging them to play an increasingly prominent role in all levels of government." Washington State Representative Kathy Lambert added "The Hispanic community shares our values for family and country. Their increase in our community is a wonderful contribution to the social fabric of our area. It is an honor to be among the charter members of the WRNHA." Toppenish City Councilman Daniel Garza, former chairman of the state's "Hispanics for Bush" and the organization's new Vice-Chair said "This past Saturday heralded the dawn of a new day for Hispanic Republicans across the State of Washington. The WRHNA State Convention was a shining example of open and respectful dialogue that addressed many of the issues affecting Hispanics across the United States and our very own state of Washington." Kirkland Deputy Mayor, Santos Contreras, the organization's new National Committeeman added, "Our first priority is to get the word out about the WRNHA. We invite everyone who share the goals of the WRNHA and the Republican Party to get involved." Membership in the WRNHA is open to Hispanic and non-Hispanics that want to work to accomplish its goals. Se Establece Capítulo del Estado de Washington de la Asamblea Republicana Hispana.
